The CBI has detained the Income Tax officer as well as an accountant chartered in Chennai due to their suspected involvement in a 2.25 lakh bribery case officials announced on Saturday. Officials stated that the bureau took action after filing an FIR against CPWD superintendent engineer Sanjay Chinchghare. The FIR also implicated assistant valuation officer D. Manjunathan and chartered accountants Satgurudas and Suresh. All were accused by officials, including the property’s owner, in the corruption case.

Chinchghare was also assigned as district valuation officer within the Chennai Income Tax Valuation Cell. A case was filed by CBI CBI on behalf of the suspect based on claims that Suresh had reported an investment with a high value within the form of an Income Tax return, which was reported towards the Income Tax Valuation Cell by National Faceless Assessment Centre, New Delhi, the officials claimed. Manunathan was alleged to have inspected the property and emphasized the differences in the property’s worth, they claimed.

The competent authority in finalising the valuation was a superintending engineer (Planning) Chinchghare, CPWD, Chennai, who was holding charge of District Valuation Officer (DVO), IT Valuation Cell, Chennai,” the CBI spokesperson stated. CBI spokespersons stated that the Income Tax Valuation Cell officials allegedly demanded a Rs 3.50 lakh bribe. Suresh, the property owner, purportedly sent the money through his Auditor/CA Satgurudas for delivery. Furthermore, The officials were accused of seeking the bribe in exchange for showing official favor. Finally, They claimed CBI arrested Manjunathan and Satgurudas after allegedly exchanging bribes as reported. CBI took action upon receiving information about the alleged exchange, resulting in their arrest.

The spokesperson added that they recovered Rs.2.25 lakhs from the AVO. They also retrieved the favorable letter/order concerning the property from the chartered accountant. The spokesperson said that searches led to the confiscation of Rs. 9 lakhs from the property of Manjunathan as well as cash of the amount of Rs. 1.25 lakhs from Satgurudas. Finally, The spokesperson stated that the Auditor/CA allegedly took Rs.1.25 lakh as charges for mediation. The total bribe amounted to Rs.3.50 lakh, according to the spokesperson’s statement.
